200 x 400 cm. By Peter Wellens and Charlotte De Baere.
This painting is the crown jewel of the Lightyears Ahead exhibition. It is the apotheosis of an intense collaboration.
Preparation, creation, and finish spanned over four months of 2020. Eight different layers. Twenty-five liters of paint. Eight liters of gloss coating. Two liters of varnish. Hundreds of hours of painting. Countless cappuccinos.
The name of the canvas, In Sterquiliniis Invenitur, translates to ‘our brightest light is found in the darkest of places’. It is a medieval, alchemic dictum that perfectly captures the essence of the work.
We trusted each other unconditionally, setting no boundaries whatsoever. Months of complementing, redirecting, and adjusting each other’s brush strokes. Peter represents dark, burning, and heavy energy. Charlotte is a beacon of light, flowing colors, and hopeful energy. By balancing those energies, our work was born.
The result is a landscape that spans lightyears, guiding us into the future. It is easy to get lost in this. Stars, singularities, nebulae. You will discover an interesting area each time you walk past this painting. That is our gift to you. A new galactic journey with every glance.
Acrylics, gold leaf, aerosol, and pigments on aluminum-stretched cotton canvas. Triple varnish and luxury gloss coat finish.
